Value Volunteers

Recognizing the contributions of others isn’t always easy or convenient, but it is a vital element in the management of volunteers. Thanking, affirming and acknowledging a volunteer increases their confidence, gratification and vitality as they use their time, talent and treasure in building God’s kingdom. It is critical to make this invest in volunteers as it not only sustains their commitment but also reinforces the value they bring to ministry. Let the following ideas jump start your own creative pulse!

  • Give the hugs, hand-shakes, or high–fives.
  • Share spoken and written affirmations and thank yous.
  • Give your time to them in a conversation or a chat over coffee.
  • Give gifts that are within their interests.
  • Deliver a home-cooked meal or provide free baby-sitting, perhaps wash their car or watch their pet.
  • Give a ticket to concerts or sporting events.
  • Commission your volunteers in a worship service.
  • Create a scrapbook/poster of them in service.
  • Give them a gift cards for a massage.
  • Place an ad in the paper or write an editorial thanking them.
  • Host a banquet in their honor.

Volunteers contribute significant value to every ministry. Their performance directly results in either productive or failing ministry efforts. Investing in your volunteers is well worth a significant effort as it enhances the performance of volunteers and the results of ministry efforts. It merits a line item in the congregational budget. Volunteers contribute significantly to mission; congregational leaders need to invest significantly in volunteers.
