Congratulations to Diane Olmstead, Preschool teacher at Redeemer Lutheran School, Oakmont, PA, for being recognized and awarded as a Superstar of Inclusion by the LICC (Local Interagency Coordinating Council) and the CEG (Community Engagement Groups). These two advisory groups, whose members have a common interest in children who are involved in early intervention services in Allegheny County, joined together to recognize early childhood teachers that are providing a positive inclusion experience in their classrooms for children with special needs.
Mrs. Olmstead is committed to helping each child have a positive school experience. With one particular 4-year-old, bilateral cochlear implants could make learning challenging. Background noise needed to be at a minimum for optimal communication and learning, and static electricity was something that needed to be minimized in order to avoid adversely affecting the implants. Amanda Wysocki, Teacher of the Hearing Impaired from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, visited this student on a weekly basis in the classroom and often commented on how Mrs. Olmstead implemented recommendations to make the student’s learning experience more valuable. Providing wooden chairs, rubber “grounds”, giving instructions at the student’s eye level and proper seat placement were just some of the special accommodations Mrs. Olmstead regularly made to ensure this 4-year-old student could participate with other children and have a wonderful learning experience.
"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."
-Proverbs 22:6
Daily, over 5,700 students in our sixty-seven English District Lutheran Schools are having their hearts and minds trained for a life of service in response to God’s tremendous grace. Our students have the opportunity to grow intellectually, physically, socially, emotionally and most importantly spiritually sitting at the feet of our District’s teachers who so faithfully and effectively serve the Master Teacher. According to the nation’s report card (NAEP), Lutheran Schools are at the top or near it in every measurable category of academic achievement.
By God’s grace, our Lutheran Schools are truly on the cutting edge of mission and ministry in our District, Synod and society. To God be the glory!
