1 Samuel Chapter 8
Even though we are done with the ark, I’d like to stay in 1 Samuel for a bit longer. So keep your book mark here…
Up to this time, the Israelites were lead by people called “Judges”. No not like Joe Brown or Judge Judy. They were basically military heroes who lead the nation against their enemies. But often times they were weak and incompetent and the people would rebel against them, and against God. There was a cycle of rebellion – punishment – return to God - deliverance that was repeated over and over. “Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” (Judges 17:6) pretty much sums up the chaotic time. For some really cool stories, read the book of Judges. Some great stories of valor and courage. And some great action and gore material…
“We want a King!” say the people. (vs. 5, 19+20) And why did they want a King? “So we can be like the other nations!” Man. Talk about following a trend! I realize that being “trendy” and doing what others do is pretty much detestable in the sub-culture. And it’s especially detestable to follow the trends of pop culture.
And this can be good. I enjoy seeing young people finding their “niche” and seeking to express themselves in their own unique way. Although I think y’all start to look alike anyway… ha ha!
But this was more than just following a trend of other nations. They already had a king! This was a rejection of God as their King (v. 7). But this was nothing new to God, and he tells Samuel to go ahead and select a king for them, but to also warn them of continuing the trend of not following him.
Their basic problem was in trusting God. They wanted something that seemed better than what God was providing for them. Something that everyone else had. And they find out later on that “the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence” as the old saying goes.
There are many trends that will try to get your attention and loyalty. And your money! Some of them will try to pull you away from God, and keep you from trusting in god’s provision for you. If need be, seek to break the cycle of your rebellion against God by dumping trends that you follow that keep you from him.
