Ecclesiastes 4: 9 – 16
Ok. First of all, the emphasis of this section is not verse 11. So if you were thinking that I was going to suggest that it is a good idea to make sure that you have someone to keep you warm in bed each night, you’re wrong! Unless you’re married to them that is.
Perhaps you have heard the term “2 heads are better than one.” It means that 2 people trying to solve a problem together can be more effective than just one person doing it. That is the emphasis of this part of scripture. Especially in regard to v. 13 where a young, poor person is better than a King who no longer listen to anyone else.
I want to encourage you today, if you don’t already have one, to find someone who can be a mentor/accountability person for you. This is a person that you can meet with privately on a regular basis and you can confide in to talk of your struggles in life, confess your weaknesses and failures to, and help keep you from falling. This is a person that you can be brutally honest with, and know that they will keep it to themselves.
But it is a also person that can be brutally honest with you about your situations, and you can count on to offer the necessary advice to remedy them. They won’t be afraid to ask the hard questions, and give you hard instructions. This is a person who will help lift you up when you fall (v. 10) and help you to resist satan (v. 12). The devil seeks to tempt you back into the situations that your accountability person wants to help you with. Together you can overpower the devil’s lies.
That is the “power of two”! That is where “2 heads are better than one”. But not just 2 heads (brain), but also the employment of 2 hearts, 2 souls, 2 people encouraging each other, 2 people praying together. Together, “…they have a good return for their work.” (v. 9)
I encourage you to find a person to be that “other head” for you.
I know you will be pleased with the results of your work together.
Pray to find that person. Or to thank God for the partner that you already have that serves to keep you accountable in resisting evil.
