Rivendell – A Place of Peace

Bible verse: Psalm 23

While not intended to be a “Christian” book, I have found many Biblical truths in The Fellowship of the Rings. It’s a great adventure as Frodo and company travel through forests, caves, hills and valleys in their journey to the one place where they can cast the evil Ring so that it will be forever destroyed.

Frodo and his friends face many evils on this journey and must be very vigilant so they will not be overcome by the evil forces who are out to get them. They are often in a state of fear and anxiety. But when they come to the city of Rivendell, this fear and anxiety seem to melt away.
. . . such was the virtue of the land of Rivendell that soon all fear and anxiety was lifted from their minds. The future, good or ill, was not forgotten, but ceased to have any power over the present. Health and hope grew strong in them, and they were content with each good day as it came, taking pleasure in every meal, and in every word and song.

This expresses to me what living in a trusting relationship with God is like. As we trust Him moment by moment, then we can be at peace, regardless of what evil we are facing. We can enjoy each day as it comes, finding pleasure in the simple activities of life – such as talking with friends, singing and eating food, not worrying about tomorrow. Aware that our God is with us and caring for us, we can be at peace and at rest. As we are aware that the Almighty God is with us, fear and anxiety can be lifted from our mind we don’t need to fear any evil, like Frodo and friends at Rivendell.

Dear Lord, may we be aware of your presence with us this day, leading and guiding us, and giving us peace and rest.
